Interdependent Ambassador Susan Frank Community Tour 2009

IP Core Team Member and Executive Administrator of the private Interdependent Community Sphere has finished the first leg of her communities and events tour and will begin her summer tour this Monday June 8th. Susan has been visiting communities and attending sustainability events as a student of sustainability and media liaison.

"When Robert and Diane Gilman first wrote a report for the Gaia Trust on ecovillages that influenced the creation of GEN, the Global Ecovillage Network, I wonder whether they realized how many aspiring intentional communities would be attempting to create and live the ecovillage vision. In Jan Martin Bang's book “Ecovillages: A Practical Guide to Sustainable Communities”, he features 24 ecovillages around the world that are fairly well established in their holistic embodiment of living sustainably, many of which I hope to visit someday. But for now, my resources of time and money, as well as my attempts to be efficient in how I spend both with the least amount of travel, are dictating who I visit where. Since I will be spending a good deal of time from July onward at The Farm Ecovillage Training Center, immersing myself in ecovillage life while apprenticing as an organizer of the Bioregional Congress, and The Farm was one of the original communities that helped found GEN, then I will have much to compare my current experiences with at that time.

The places I have visited so far do not call themselves ecovillages, however, they are in their own unique ways centers for learning about sustainable practices and doing what they can to increase awareness, both for themselves and for the greater communities in which they are located. They each are in a different place, focusing on different aspects of living a sustainable life, and I look forward to revisiting in the future to see how things are coming along. Hello from Wisteria, It was lovely to meet Susan over Solstice week. She volunteered with us as a staff member so she got a look at our workings in a compressed way! While we were together, a photographer from the Columbus Dispatch (Ohio) spent a day with us and we have video of the event.
